Terry England "The Budget Man"
Terry England’s life is all about budgets. Whether he’s working in his capacity as the president and CEO of The Homeport FARM♦MART in Winder, Georgia, or representing the 108th House District in the Georgia General Assembly, where he was recently named Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, his goal is to make Georgia—and Winder—a better place, fiscally speaking. “My main goal is to leave our state in better shape than it was when I began my service. I know that sounds hokey, but that's why I'm doing it,” he says. “We have had the opportunity the last few years to really examine our state services, looking for savings due to budget constraints. Through doing this, it has allowed us to focus on our core mission of the state and better spend the taxpayer's money. After all, it is their money and not the state's.” England has gotten a lot of his budget training from challenges he’s faced at The Homeport FARM♦MART. England says that in 2005, Winder, Georgia was in the midst of a building boom, and many of his customers were tradesmen in the construction industry. The town was one of the first areas hit by the recession. “Since 2005 we have seen our sales drop about 45 percent,” says England. He says he’s worked hard to cut expenses and when employees leave he hasn’t replaced them. He’s reduced inventory levels and only advertises where he thinks he’ll get the best value for his advertising dollar, and that has been in the FARM♦MART sale circulars. “FARM♦MART allows us to print our sale circulars in an inexpensive manner, and that has allowed us to stay in front of our customer base through inserts in our local newspapers with our circulars,” he says. “Wallace Hardware has been good when it comes to customizing the circulars for our part of the country, and that allows us to still target our base.”
